‘Modern Masters in Print: Picasso, Dali, Matisse & Warhol’
Burton Art Gallery and Museum, Bideford
Exhibition until Monday 15th July
Devon art gallery’s big ambitions pay off
With visitor figures averaging 100 people per day from all over the South West and beyond, bookings by 13 different Devon schools, and donations of almost £3000 from supportive visitors so far, the ‘Modern Masters in Print’ exhibition will truly be leaving the Burton Art Gallery in Bideford on a high when it ends Monday 15th July.
Over 180 people attended the Pre-view of the exhibition held on the 4th May, including the comedian Phil Jupitus, who was on tour in the South West at the time. On Saturday 29th June, coinciding with Bideford’s Heritage Day, over 212 people attended the exhibition in one day – a record for the Gallery so far.
Young people view masterpieces ‘in the flesh’
For the approximately 400 pupils and students brought to the Burton through local and regional schools, groups and colleges the exhibition was a unique opportunity to experience work by Picasso, Dali, Matisse and Warhol ‘in the flesh’ in Devon rather than learn about it from books or having to travel to cities such as Bristol or London.
Nicola Waltho, Art Teacher at Bideford College said, “A really inspiring exhibition, such a great opportunity for students to view the work by some of the most influential artists of the 20th Century. Students have said they ‘felt honoured to see Picasso’s work, and be able to see how different artists have worked in the same technique’, widening their experience of different art and artists, first hand.”
Unique in Devon
As the only art space on the north coast between Bristol and St Ives of its size, the local authority owned Burton Art Gallery is unique in bringing nationally and internationally acclaimed artists to North Devon. The Gallery continues to forge strong links with major national institutions such as The Barbican, The Royal Academy, London, The Jerwood Drawing Prize, and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
The Burton was chosen by the Victoria and Albert Museum to be the first venue to have the ‘Modern Masters in Print’ exhibition outside of London as part of a seven venue tour. Next up are the McManus Galleries, Dundee, and in 2014 the exhibition will also tour to The Collection, Lincoln, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath and finally ending in 2015 at the Inverness Museum & Art Gallery.
Warren Collum, Exhibition and Collections Officer, said :‘I love the fact that in January we had a schools exhibition, using a billion staples to hang 600 pieces of work, and 6 months later we’ve got Picasso and Matisse requiring precision and approval by the Victoria and Albert Museum – all of which shows exactly what we do, something for everyone.’
The Modern Masters exhibition is organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, touring to the Burton 4 May – 15 July 2013.
