When Councillors become Curators…

Bideford from Upcott Hill

Bideford from Upcott Hill

This Autumn, the Burton Art Gallery and Museum in Bideford, North Devon, is celebrating the digitisation of its stunning permanent oil painting collection as part of the national ‘Your Paintings’ initiative by the BBC and the Public Catalogue Foundation. The exhibition Members and Staff Select, will showcase works chosen from the Burton’s collection by councillors and senior staff from Torridge District Council, offering a fascinating perspective and interpretation on the work through the eyes of those who represent and support the Torridge community.

‘Your Paintings’ is an extraordinary nationwide project launched in 2010, aimed at digitally documenting every one of the more than 200,000 oil paintings held in public ownership in the UK. The ‘Your Paintings’ collection, which can be viewed on the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/collection), includes works by some of the greatest British and international painters of the last 700 years, as well as paintings by thousands of lesser known artists.

‘Your Paintings’ now holds 86 of the Burton Art Gallery and Museum’s permanent collection of oil paintings, which include a wide variety of works by influential classic English artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds as well as by important contemporary artists such as abstract painter Patrick Jones. To find out which paintings made it to the Members and Staff Select exhibition and why, visit the Burton Art Gallery and Museum between Saturday 21st September and Monday 4th November.

Torridge District Council’s Lead Member for Culture, Jane Whittaker who chose ‘A View of Bideford from Upcott Hill’ for the exhibition, said:

‘Born and bred in Bideford, this has to be one of my favourite views of the town. It depicts the town in the 17th Century, but you can still pick out the core landmarks that exist today. If I could own a painting of Bideford, this would be it. We’re privileged that it’s part of the Burton’s collection and is preserved for all to enjoy.’
