Devon in December: Free festive activities – our alternative Top 5..

As cities can get very crowded this time of year and big flashing light displays and Father Christmas grottoes are not everyone’s idea of fun, we’ve searched the calendars of our county’s towns and villages to give you an alternative top 5 of FREE (art) activities for the whole family that are guaranteed to get you into the festive spirit!

1 – Honiton
Place: Thelma Hulbert Gallery
Date: Sat 7 Dec & Sun 8 Dec
Time: Sat 10.30am-12pm / 2-3.30pm, Sun 10am-4pm
Activityy: Winter Warming Weekend! Saturday – Free family story-telling and art activity with local author/illustrator Carolyn King. Including *POP UP CAFE* : Boston Tea Party will be selling hot drinks and delicious cakes from 10am-4pm. Sunday – THG will be open as part of Honiton’s Bygone Christmas event serving mulled wine, mince pies and hot chocolate.

2 – Widecombe-in-the-Moor
Place: Town Centre
Date: Sat 14 Dec
Time: 1-3pm
Activity: Come and see Father Christmas ride into the romantic Dartmoor village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. There may be snow, but there certainly will be a FREE present to every child aged 11 years and under, and plenty of things to see and do all day (from 10 am).

3 – Barnstaple
Place: White Moose
Date: Sat 30 Nov, Thu 5 Dec, Sat 14 Dec, Wed 18 Dec, Fri 20 Dec
Time: 11am-2pm or 11am-4pm
Activity: In addition to exhibiting and selling some specially crafted and affordable works as part of the ‘Art of Giving’ exhibition at White Moose gallery, two of North Devon’s finest artists Hilary Paynter and Kevin Green will be working in the gallery on the some of the above dates to demonstrate the technical intricacies of their art to visitors.

4 – Bovey Tracey
Place: Devon Guild of Crafts
Date: Weekends from 1 Dec – 28 Dec
Time: Various
Activity: Free weekend demos and drop ins with Devon Guild members John Hagger (leather), Roberta Ayles (glass), Deborah Treliving (print), Gillie Hoyte Byrom (enamelling), Iris Milward (poetry tile), Janet Wingate (embroidery) – watch, learn and try a range of crafts.

5 – Crediton
Place: Town Square
Date: Wed 4 Dec
Time: 2-5pm
Activity: The popular annual ‘Fayre In The Square’ in Market Street, organised by volunteers from Crediton Arts Centre and Crediton Rural Arts and Music Project (CRAMP), will have seasonal entertainment between 2pm and 5pm, including carols, mulled wine, street theatre and live music.
